One of the weird things about art, including cinema, is that they may not be accepted in their time, but they may go on to become legends in a later time. Several of the most revered artists from the Renaissance era today, weren’t really given much credit during the time they lived. And the Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man is one such movie.
Back when it released in 1991, the movie was a massive failure.
One would think that a movie with two American icons, Harley-Davidson and Marlboro, in its very name would do good at the box office. But, it didn’t. It was a colossal failure. The movie costed the producers some $23mn back then to make, but could only earn some $7mn from the ticket sales.
However, it has still grown to become a cult classic for bikers.
Set in the then-future 1996, the movie shows the story of a biker named Harley Davidson, played by Mickey Rourke. Like most other movies based around the biker culture, this one too took a very stereotypical look at the life of a biker. Davidson is dressed in biker gear throughout the movie, and sports short dyed hair.
Here’s a walk down the memory lane for you, the official trailer of the movie from back when it was released. You really ought to watch this, and share it with your biker buddies. Don’t forget to tell us the fun stories you’ve had watching this cult classic time and again, in the comments section below.
